Heating
TYPES OF SYSTEMS AND BOILERS
Conventional Heating System
Requires two water tanks located high in the building, one a Cold Water Storage Tank the other an Expansion / Feed tank, this system also requires a Hot Water Cylinder. The storage cylinder holds a large quantity of hot water that is available immediately. However when this store has been used up it has to be reheated, this could take anything up to 1 hour. This type of system is often the least efficient due to the lack of controls fitted causing excessive boiler usage.
System Boiler Heating Systems
System boilers come in two types, a vented low pressure and an un-vented high pressure system. Both require a Hot Water cylinder. Vented system boilers require a cold water storage tank but most of the other components are held in the unit itself which means that installation is quicker and cheaper. Also, the hot primary water is pumped through the system to the radiators and hot water cylinder resulting in a faster response and more economical running costs.Un-vented system boilers incorporate the equipment necessary to form a sealed system including a pressure relief valve and a pressure gauge, removing the need for a feed and expansion tank. By adding an un-vented hot water cylinder to this system the cold water storage tank and associated pipework would not be required and the hot water would be supplied to all taps at mains pressure.
Combi Boiler Heating Systems
Combi's are now the most used form of central heating boilers. Most Combi's run on mains pressure water, thus do not require tanks to be placed in the loft. They also eliminate the need for a hot water cylinder as they instantly heat the water when it is needed. Another benefit with the Combi is that, due to it running from the mains water supply, you can create an effective power shower without the need for a pump.Combi boilers require the least amount of plumbing thus offer a cost saving when installing. The disadvantages of the Combi system is the hot water supply flow rate is slower than a system with a cylinder and only one hot tap can be used at a time due to the water being heated instantaneously.
Condensing high efficiency boilers
A condensing boiler is a high efficiency modern boiler that incorporates an extra heat exchanger so that the hot exhaust gases lose much of their energy to pre-heat the water in the boiler system. When working at peak efficiency, the water vapour produced in the combustion process condenses back into liquid form releasing the latent heat of vaporisation. A side effect is that this water, known as condensate, which is usually acidic, has to be piped away to a drain or soak away. Please see our Energy Efficiency page for more details
What controls do I need with a high efficiency boiler?
Good heating controls require a minimum of four things:
-
Electronic timer or programmer that allows separate switching of heating and hot water
-
Room thermostat
-
Thermostatic radiator control valves (TRV’s), and
-
Separate thermostatic control on the hot water system

Additional controls that may be worth considering to get the very best from a central heating system include intelligent heating controls, a weather compensator, a boiler energy manager and full zone control.
These are all explained on our Central Heating Controls page.
Radiators
Radiators are available in all shapes sizes and colours to compliment any room or style, below is a very small example of some of the radiators available, please contact us to discuss your personal requirements.
